The Buzz About Wasps and Bees: Part I

“Why are wasps?” my second-grader asked not too long ago. Why indeed.

Come Spring, I’m always glad to see the honeybees populating our lavender plants and clover. But the yellowjacket hovering menacingly over the nice piece of salmon my husband is grilling out on the deck is not so welcome.

Bees are pretty much worshipped here in Marin, where people have a sound appreciation for the vital role they play in supporting our food chain; they are indispensable pollinators of our crops and wildflowers. But what about those wasps?
